How it's measured
- Where the data comes from
- TheirStack, which collects job postings from LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor and thousands of company career sites. When the same job appears on several sites, it's counted once.
- What counts as QA
- A US posting with a QA or software testing title, such as "QA Engineer", "SDET" or "Software Test Engineer", whose description mentions software testing work like test cases, test automation, Selenium, Playwright or Postman. Quality roles in factories, labs, construction, food, healthcare and hardware are left out.
- What counts as tech
- A US posting with a software, data, IT, security or QA job title, such as "Software Engineer", "Developer", "DevOps Engineer", "Data Scientist" or "IT Support". Sales, recruiting and real estate titles that use these words are left out.
- When it's counted
- Each morning, the site counts the jobs posted two days earlier, by the date each job was posted. Job sites keep surfacing a day's postings for more than a day, so waiting gives a more complete count.
- Why a 7-day average
- Far fewer jobs are posted on weekends, so single days zigzag. The 7-day average smooths that out, and the weekly change compares it with the average a week earlier.
- QA vs all tech jobs
- Both 7-day averages shown as the change since the first week of tracking, so they share one scale. QA's share of new tech postings is in the first chart's summary. If the source starts covering more job sites, both numbers grow together, so the comparison shows whether QA itself is gaining or losing ground within tech.
- Tools in QA postings
- Once a month, the share of the last 30 days' QA postings whose description names each tool. A posting can name several tools, so the shares add up to more than 100%.
